Nebius's story starts with a corporate divorce. It emerged from Yandex N.V., the company often called Russia's Google, after a messy separation forced by geopolitical pressure. The re-listed entity kept the engineering DNA of Yandex — a team trained to run massive infrastructure in punishing conditions — but it cleared away old country risk and aimed directly at Western AI customers. Today, the business has three layers: the Nebius AI Cloud, a GPU-as-a-service product; Nebius AI Studio, an AI-native platform for development and inference; and an "AI factory" model that has been linked to European supercomputing centers. That last piece matters. Europe is trying to build sovereign AI capacity, and Nebius can present itself as a local, listed, compliant alternative to American hyperscalers.
Such positioning explains some of the premium, but not all of it. To understand 55x, you have to look at the comparable set. CoreWeave, another GPU cloud built for AI, has traded between roughly 20x and 40x revenue in recent years. Lambda, Together AI, and a host of smaller players have raised at valuations that make traditional SaaS investors wince. The entire sector is being priced as if AI compute demand will keep outrunning supply for years. Nebius is not an outlier; it is the next expression of a sector-wide narrative. The same psychological machinery that priced DeFi tokens in 2021 is now pricing GPU clouds in 2026: scarcity, leverage, and narrative momentum.
If you grew up in crypto, this setup should feel familiar. It is the same alchemy that turned "total value locked" into a proxy for safety in 2021, or "users" into a proxy for revenue in 2013. The metric is real but incomplete. 55x revenue tells you what the market believes, not what the business is worth. It tells you that investors are willing to price a GPU cloud company as if it were the scarce resource itself, rather than a middleman renting that resource. In my experience, middlemen survive until the supplier decides it doesn't need them anymore. The same pattern repeats every cycle: first the asset, then the middleman, then the reckoning.

The second hidden assumption is accounting. GPU cloud companies often sign multi-year contracts with prepaid components. Depending on revenue recognition, a 55x trailing multiple might be 25x on forward revenue if the contracted revenue is already locked in. The original report doesn't distinguish between booked, billed, and recognized revenue. In token markets, we call this the circulating supply versus total supply problem. The third hidden assumption is the one nobody wants to talk about: utilization. Public cloud operators rarely disclose GPU occupancy. Now for the competitive side. The obvious threat is hyperscalers. AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud have custom silicon — Trainium, TPU — and enormous pricing power. They can subsidize GPU instances to win enterprise contracts. Nebius cannot match that scale. But the less obvious threat is NVIDIA itself. NVIDIA's DGX Cloud and its strategic investments in companies like CoreWeave mean that the semiconductor giant is simultaneously the supplier and the competitor. That is a dangerous position for any pure-play intermediate. The value of Nebius's allocation rights depends entirely on NVIDIA's decision to keep allocating.
And yet, the contrarian view is not simply that Nebius is overpriced. The contrarian view is that the biggest threat is also the biggest opportunity. Europe's AI factories and the EU AI Act are creating something hyperscalers cannot easily replicate: regulatory proximity. Data sovereignty is not a technical bottleneck; it is a political and emotional one. Code is law, but people are purpose. A European cloud provider that can credibly promise GDPR compliance, no foreign intelligence access, and a neutral governance structure has a trust advantage that outweighs price per petaflop. That is why community is the new central bank. The market is pricing Nebius not as a GPU broker, but as a vehicle for European technological self-assertion. The problem is that sovereignty narratives are not recurring revenue. They need actual contracts, tenders, and government anchor tenants to become something you can model.

I also cannot ignore the geopolitical residue. Even after the split from Yandex, Nebius will face questions about Russian origins. Some European clients will demand extra proof of independence. Those questions are a compliance cost today, but they may become a moat later if regulators force all AI infrastructure providers to prove their supply chain and ownership. In that scenario, Nebius's painful restructuring becomes an accidental asset.
The historical precedent is not crypto at all. In 2000, Equinix traded at revenue multiples above 100x at the peak of the dot-com boom, then fell to the 20x-30x range as the world normalized. The company survived and eventually built enormous value. The lesson is not that high multiples are always wrong; it is that they mark the point where the price begins to depend on execution rather than narrative. Nebius is at that point.
So what would I actually watch? Not the 55x multiple. I would watch the ratio of new contracts to recognized revenue, the company's total contract value, and any disclosure about GPU utilization. If Nebius announces a multi-billion dollar multi-year agreement with a major AI lab, that matters more than a thousand price targets. If it wins an EU AI Factory tender, that changes the narrative from speculative to structural. If it starts publishing utilization or revenue per GPU per hour, I will take the stock seriously as an infrastructure asset. If it only talks about demand, I will remember that every bubble talks about demand until the week it doesn't. Don't trust, verify. But also, connect — because the only way to get the data is to build relationships with operators, not just read spreadsheets.
Resilience beats hype every time. Nebius may be the best-positioned European GPU cloud in a world desperate for compute. But the 55x multiple is not a fair value. It is a set of assumptions about utilization, accounting, regulatory tailwinds, and NVIDIA's whims. Treat it like a protocol with unaudited reserves. Demand the metrics. If the numbers appear and stay strong, this could become a generational infrastructure company. If they don't, the market will eventually mark the narrative down to reality. The GPU cloud is not a meme. It just trades like one until someone proves otherwise.
